The Mattamuskeet Goose Club has a long history, dating back several decades to the founding of the club in 1932. The 22 gentlemen who comprised the original board of members were notable businessmen, each with their own successful career or private practice. But beyond that, they bonded in fellowship as avid hunters who had hunted many of the top-rated clubs across the United States.

We’d like to celebrate the relaunch of the illustrious Mattamuskeet Club by taking a moment to acknowledge our roots and celebrate our history. North Carolina has seen decades upon decades of waterfowl hunting, and the Mattamuskeet Club was far from the first to begin the tradition. Let’s travel into the past for a brief look at the rich history of this sport.

Located on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, Currituck Sound has long been regarded as one of the premier destinations for waterfowl hunting. The Native Americans that populated the area were already aware of it long before the colonists arrived, and they enjoyed the bounty that it provided. Throughout the early 19th century, Currituck Sound and the rest of the northeastern part of the state was still relatively remote.

That all changed in 1857 with the formation of the Currituck Shooting Club. Started by a group of businessmen who met in New York City to draw up the bylaws, this club was the first in Currituck County and the oldest hunting club still active before its clubhouse burned in 2003. Currituck County became a hotspot for hunting clubs, which did wonders for the local economy.

Not far from the banks of Currituck, The Whalehead Club was founded in the town of Corolla, North Carolina. The opulent mansion that serves as a hunting lodge for the club was originally built for owners and founders Mr. and Mrs. Knight in 1922. The land sat vacant for many years, but it’s since been purchased and restored by Currituck County and opened to the public in 2002. From the pre-colonial days to the historical landmarks that still stand today, waterfowl hunting has been a significant part of North Carolina history and its economy. Here at Mattamuskeet Goose Club, we’re excited to continue the tradition started by our founders nearly a century ago, and we want you to be a part of its ongoing legacy. Become a member of the Founder’s Club today, and support our historic relaunch as we look to the future of the Mattamuskeet Goose Club!
