Greg Cherry was an attorney and Governor of North Carolina from 1945-1949. Known as the good roads Governor, he also championed hospital growth in rural areas. Several hospitals in North Carolina are named after him. Many claimed that his trips back and forth from Raleigh to Hyde County were key in establishing his dedication to improving highway quality. During his tenure, Cherry significantly expanded the state’s road network, including the development of the paved farm-to-market roads that boosted the local economy. His administration also oversaw the introduction of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol and the modernization of the state’s healthcare system. Additionally, Cherry was instrumental in the establishment of the North Carolina Medical Care Commission, which played a pivotal role in improving healthcare facilities across the state. His efforts laid the groundwork for future infrastructure and healthcare improvements that continued to benefit North Carolinians long after his term ended.
