Camouflage gear is an important part of any hunt. Without it, the animals will spot you before you have a chance to get within shooting range, even when you’re tucked away in a blind. Waterfowl hunting is no different. In fact, it can be tougher in many ways because ducks, geese, and other birds have incredible eyesight. You want to make sure they feel at ease in their natural habitat so as not to disturb them and spoil the hunt.

Almost as significant as having camouflage is selecting the correct kind. There are multiple colors and patterns on the market to choose from, and it can be a little overwhelming. But when you consider the various factors that play into your decision, it becomes a little easier. Let us walk you through the two most critical components so you’ll be ready to get suited up for the season ahead.

Pattern

The main pattern of your camo is designed to blend in with your surroundings. It’s important to select a pattern based on where you’re going to be. Waterfowl hunting takes place in the swamps, marshes, and wetlands, so you’ll need camo that incorporates the tall grasses and reeds of that biome. Moreover, search for patterns that are specifically created to break up your silhouette. Animals can sometimes spot the outline of the human form, no matter how well camouflaged, causing them to spook and flee.

Color

From the lush greens of a densely populated forest to the sparse white of a world blanketed in snow, there are plenty of color options to choose from. Much like with the pattern, it depends almost entirely on where you’re hunting and at what time of the year. This season is characterized by muted greens and browns as the leaves fall from the trees and the world goes into hibernation. Skip the vibrant blaze orange that adorns a good deal of big-game hunting camo. While deer and other large animals cannot detect colors with longer wavelengths, waterfowl have fairly advanced eyesight. Selecting the correct color for your season and environment will make it that much more difficult for animals to spot you.
